“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."
--Matthew 6:31-33(NLT)
Are you a "worry-wart"? If so, you are not alone. Studies show that the average person spends about 2.25 hours a day worrying. Some of the most common areas of worry are finances, health, aging, job security, and relationships. As we are inundated with a myriad of life's realities that could seemingly perpetuate an on-going cycle of worry, fear, and dread--God in His sovereignty has given us an antidote. His word tells us that worrying adds nothing to our lives but distress.
"That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?"
--Matthew 6:25-27(NLT)
As believers and children of God, He does not call us to a life of worry. The Word clearly states that he already knows our needs. If our heavenly Father knows what we need, why are we worrying? The antidote for worry is making the Kingdom of God our priority and to live righteously. If we do this, God promises to give us everything that we need.
The Greek word for "seek" referenced in Matthew 6:33, is "zeteo", meaning to aim at, to strive after, meditate, or crave. Are you striving after the Kingdom of God? Are you craving, meditating, or desiring the things of Him? Or, are you striving after the things of the world? If you answered yes to the latter, that is the prescription for worry. Commit to making the Kingdom of God your pursuit and watch Him supply your need and alleviate worry permanently from your life!
