Holding Your Past Against You

Overcoming Tormenting Thoughts

In over 20 years of counseling various in-patient, out-patient, and in home settings, I have heard countless stories of many who are tormented by their pasts.  The torment takes on many forms--explosive anger, phobias, emotional avoidance, anxiety, substance abuse, social isolation, depression, and so on--  manifestation of a soul in torment--locked in the past and resigned to a life of internal torture and imprisonment.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, then I have good news and the key to unlock the emotional prison door.  Ready?....

...You are already free.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy).."
--Luke 4:18 (AMP)

Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, accomplished all on the cross.  That is why He said, "It is finished" (John 19:30).  His death bought (I Corinthians 6:20) our forgiveness, liberty, healing, and reconciled us back to the Father.  Jesus' life, death, and resurrection gives us access to the abundant life that is found only in God (John 10:10)

"...in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."--Psalm 16:11 (KJV)

Through Christ, we have been given access to everything we could possibly need to live lives of victory, prosperity, health, wellness, and abundance.

Here are some life changing truths to consider in overcoming tormenting thoughts and holding your past against you:
  • God is a forgiving God. (Psalm 99:8)

  • God is poised and ready save, rescue, and deliver (Isaiah 59:1)

  • When God forgives, he forgets (Micah 7:19) God does not run tapes or hold our past against us.

  • When we turn to God with sincere prayers of repentance and humility, he promises to heal the wounds of our soul. (II Chronicles 7:14)

  • Nothing and no one can ever separate us from the love of God. (Romans 8:31-39)

  • The enemy of our soul is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10), but there is no condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1)

Many people remain in bondage because they cannot believe that these truths would apply to them.  This is where faith must be activated.  Even if we don't "feel" it, we receive the truths of God's word by faith:

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
--Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

"And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him."--Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Lastly, often there is an instinctive tendency to run and hide from God--the only One who has the power to forgive, heal, and liberate.  This is characteristic of humanity's  fallen nature, as evidenced in the lives of Adam  and Eve after they had eaten the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:8-10).  Running from God opens the door to torment.

We overcome holding our past against us and gain freedom from tormenting thoughts by:
1. Running to God in prayer and repentance

2. Confessing our brokenness and receiving his forgiveness

3. Activating our faith

4. Talking it through.  Share your story with your pastor, clergy person, or counselor.

Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I confess that I have been holding my past against me and have been living in torment.  I confess that I have been hiding and running from you.  I pray that you would forgive me of______________.  I am sorry.

I receive the truths of your word and embrace the liberty and freedom that I already have in Christ.  I grab hold of them by faith.

Thank you for your unfailing, unrelenting love, compassion, and pursuit of me.  I thank you that I have worth, value, meaning, and importance in your eyes (psalm 139:14).  I disallow intrusive tormenting thoughts to be at the helm of my soul.  I decree and declare the word of God over my life that this a day of new beginnings (Isaiah 43:19).

Amen and so be it!

Praying God's Word

"I bow
before You, looking to Your holy temple, and praise Your name, for Your unfailing love and Your truth; for You have placed Your name and Your word over all things and all times."--Psalm 138:2 (VOICE)

Human relationships take time to develop; the same is true of our relationship with the Father.  The good news is, God makes it easy for us!  He gives us His word and thereby the words to pray!  This is no minor point--the Bible tells us in Psalm 138:2 that God places his word over all things and all times!  Everything else pales in comparison.  Wow.

God is interactive, communicative, and accessible.  He is a loving Father who longs for relationship with his children.  And, we have been given the privilege of cultivating and building our relationship with Him.  Prayer is a vital component of this.  If we are not praying and taking time to pursue God and draw nigh to Him, we miss out on the blessings and benefits the come with spending time in his presence--joy, peace, comfort, rest, etc.

What a blessed people we are!  We serve a God of relationship who not only listens, but speaks and gives us the language of the Kingdom so that we may experience a mutually satisfying dialogue.

"The" Solution

"But remember this—the wrong desires that come into your life aren’t anything new and different. Many others have faced exactly the same problems before you. And no temptation is irresistible. You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it, for he has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape temptation’s power so that you can bear up patiently against it."--I Corinthians 10:13(TLB)

I have good news for you today!  What if I told you that for every problem--there is a solution, coupled with victory?  Interested?  Well, it's true!  It does not matter what the issue or problem is--relationship problems, emotional distress, addictions (gambling, alcohol, drugs, food, pornography, etc.), problems with kids, workplace troubles, or even problems with neighbors--there is a solution!  It is found in God.  He IS the solution for anything we are facing.  But, we must be active participants in confronting the problem head-on.

As we consider the heroes of the Bible, we can see that, yes; they were great and experienced tremendous victory in the face of very real and scary challenges because God was with them.  But, victory did not fall out the sky or happen by osmosis.  Victory happened internally--at the heart level before it was ever an outward reality.

  • Abraham (Genesis)
  • Caleb (Numbers 13:30)
  • Deborah (Judges 4)
  • David (I Samuel 17)
  • Jehu (2 Kings 9)
  • Ezra (Ezra 3)
  • Paul (Acts 16)

We win at the moment of revelation of who God is, and the realization and acceptance that it is possible to defeat an enemy; no matter how intimidating, strong, or ancient (been around for a long time).

Yielding to the word of God, obeying/following his instruction, and receiving it all by faith is key.  When it's getting real and the challenges seem impossible, overwhelming, and insurmountable--that's prime time for God! When the odds of winning are not in our favor--we will win when we sign on to go with God and keep our ear to His mouth so that we can hear and receive  His direction and instruction, as in the case of the aforementioned Bible heroes.

No matter what problem you are facing today, rest assured it is not new to God and there is a way of escape (I Corinthians 10:13) when the principles of scripture are applied.

“
When you go to war and see before you vast numbers of horses and chariots, an army far greater than yours, don’t be frightened! The Lord your God is with you—the same God who brought you safely out of Egypt!"
--Deuteronomy 20:1(TLB)

“The Lord will defeat your enemies before you; they will march out together against you but scatter before you in seven directions!"--Deuteronomy 28:7(TLB)

The Broken Spirit

"The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But as for a broken spirit, ho can bear it?"--Proverbs 18:14 (AMP)

On yesterday's podcast, we talked about the broken spirit and prayed a healing prayer.  If you missed it, please check it out!

Here are some highlights:
  • There is always hope for the believer!
  • It is God's desire that we experience "zoe" life (John 10:10).  This is the absolute fullness of life.  It is a life that is blessed, vigorous, and full of vitality.  It's life that is superfluously abundant, more remarkable, uncommon, surpassing, and more excellent!
  • It is possible to be alive, but not living.  When this is the case, we are not experiencing "zoe" life as God intended.  Jesus came so that we could live lives of victory and bounty--anything less does not bring God glory.  We are living beneath our privilege as believers

How do we overcome a broken spirit?
  • Receive the truths and promises of God's word by faith!  Bypass natural logic and reasoning and allow your spirit to embrace God's word
  • Pursue God with your whole heart.  Meditate and pray the scriptures.  Find scriptures to commit to memory.  The word of God is bread for the soul.  It will nourish, strengthen, and fortify (Check out our "Words of Life" page for scriptures)
  • Get to the root of brokenness
  • Solicit the help and counsel of your pastor or clergy person.  Pastors are vital in our walk of faith.  They are the ones whom God has entrusted to care for our souls.  We need them! (Hebrews 13:17)
  • Be willing to do the hard work; honestly looking at, confronting, and dealing with the unpleasant things that are bringing distress
  • Practice self-care.  Be kind and good to yourself.  Exercise, eat a healthy and nutritious food.  Get adequate rest.
  • Surround yourself in a community of care.  We are the body of Christ.  We are called to love and care for one another. (Matthew 19:19/Hebrews 10:24)
  • Sever negativity--including toxic thoughts, people, and environments.  For healing to take place, we must avoid unhealthy environments

"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."--I John 4:4(KJV)

As a child growing up in South Jersey in the '70s and '80s, there were three local TV stations and UHF.  Our TV had a rabbit ear antenna and you had to physically get up and turn the dial to change the station.  And, since there were only three stations and UHF, the pickings were slim.  The news aired at 6:00pm and 11:00pm.  At midnight, TV went off the air.  I vividly recall the image of the American flag flying as the national anthem played in the background, and then the sign off.  Nothing to see but a snowy screen until the morning.

How times have changed!  TV never sleeps.  And, the news streams all day--be it through TV, radio, or our devices.  We are viewing violence, terror, hatred, and extreme disregard for life--all of which are deeply disturbing and troubling to most adults.  As we endeavor to make sense of what we are seeing, how do we help our children, who undoubtedly are seeing and hearing what we are seeing and hearing and impacted thereby?

Some thoughts to consider:
  • Children have an inherent need for love, protection, safety, and security.  A lot of what we are seeing may evoke a sense of fear, worry, and anxiety in children.
  • Children see, hear, absorb, and feel a lot more than they will ever verbalize.  Be sure to check-in by asking questions
  • Be a thoughtful, objective listener.  Take time to understand and be sensitized to what is going on in your child's mind/heart.  Avoid minimizing or downplaying her feelings.
  • Know your child.  Wisely consider his personality and what he is mature enough to handle as you honestly answer questions.  Keep it simple. Sometimes, less (information) is best
  • Be reassuring--help kids feel safe
  • Monitor the content of what you will allow your children to view/hear.  Turn the TV off; many times the news loops--repeating graphic footage
  • Keep the doors of communication open and always be available to answer questions or address concerns that may come up.

Supernatural Rest

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
--Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
For many, life is busy, hectic, demanding, and stressful.   We are inundated with tasks, chores, and deadlines.  We are raising families, taking care of elderly loved ones, and managing careers.  We are living in a time of extreme violence, hatred, and lack of regard.  As our minds attempt to absorb, filter, and organize what we are experiencing in efforts to make sense of our world--we can become completely overwhelmed.

The cares of life can render one mentally exhausted, weary, and depleted.  Increased worry, anxiety, frustration, and irritability as well as statements like, "I've had enough" or "I don't know how much more I can take" are indicators that we are at a place of undeniable mental fatigue.

So what is one to do? How do we traverse through the incessant demands and cares of life?  Is it possible to experience the abundant life Jesus spoke of in John 10:10?

"...I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]."--John 10:10 (AMP)

Good News!  The answer is YES to the above.  Even in the place of tremendous stress and pressure, we can experience lives of joy that are spiritually rich and overflowing.  How?  I'm glad you asked!  We can experience abundant living when we accept Jesus' invitation to come to Him.  Because it is an invitation, it requires a willful, volitional, and deliberate decision to go and receive what Christ is offering.

It requires putting pride and ego aside.  "I'm good..." or "I got it..." or "Thanks, but I'm okay..." speaks of efforts to maintain control and disallow or forbid one's self from being in a posture to receive.  Such acts impede obtaining the rest noted in Matthew 11:28, which in the Greek translation is "anapauo", meaning to refresh, take ease, to give one's self rest, to take rest, to keep quiet or calm, or to cause or permit one to cease from any movement or labor in order to recover and collect strength.

Whoa!  Powerful, right?  Told you there was good news!  This is what Jesus is offering to those who are tired, weary, and burdened.  And, best of all, we can experience this rest on a continuum.  The rest of God is not a pause break or a temporary reprieve; it is a lifestyle.  It is possible to live in a place of supernatural rest when we accept Jesus' invitation to come to Him.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside peaceful waters.  He renews my soul. He guides me along the paths of righteousness for the sake of his name."--Psalm 23:2-3(GW)

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, we bring our burdens and weariness before you.  Every outstanding issue, concern, and worry.  We bring the things that are weighing us down and bringing distress to our souls.  Unresolved matters that are keeping us roused; bringing negativity and toxicity into our lives. We thank you that as we make an exchange in the spiritual realm--exchanging our cares for your rest--you are downloading wisdom.  You're giving answers and solutions.  You are bringing peace and endowing us with strength and grace.    Thank you for your love and compassion toward us.  We receive it now.

We decree and declare that we are recipients of your rest and we walk in perpetual refreshing. In Jesus' name, Amen and so be it according to your word.

Becoming Uncomfortable with the Familiar

7/12/2016

"But Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Yes—and if you embrace this kingdom life and don’t doubt God, you’ll not only do minor feats like I did to the fig tree, but also triumph over huge obstacles. This mountain, for instance, you’ll tell, ‘Go jump in the lake,’ and it will jump. Absolutely everything, ranging from small to large, as you make it a part of your believing prayer, gets included as you lay hold of God.”--Matthew 21:21(MSG)

Imagine anger personified; knocking at your front door:

"Hi, I'm your Mom/Dad's friend, Anger.  May I come in?"

You reply, "Of course, please come in.  Let me take your coat.  Sit down and make yourself comfortable.  Kids!!! Come meet Anger!!!"

You put on a pot of coffee and prepare a tray of cookies.  "Anger" gets comfortable as the two of you, along with your family, get more acquainted--more familiar.

Sounds ridiculous, right?  But it happens.  Maybe it's not anger, maybe it's fear, worry, doubt, lying, manipulation, pessimism, defiance, blame-shifting, enabling, people-pleasing, or promiscuity.  Many of the challenges, "mountains" we are confronted with are generational.  They are family patterns and styles of relating that travel from generation to generation.  These traits or characteristics have been around so long, they have become like old family friends.  We are used to them being around because many of us were introduced to them in our youth.

Yet, you may be hearing the still, small voice of the Spirit of God saying, "This is not a friend.  It is a mountain."  And in your heart, albeit a harsh reality, you are agreeing with the Spirit of God.  We have learned to navigate around the mountain; and rather than living lives of abundance, we are living in perpetual bondage--experiencing fear, distress, frustration, and defeat rather than joy, peace, satisfaction, confidence, and victory.

So how do we move forward?  Recognize that authentic and lasting change occurs when we make a decision to leave the familiar as well as acknowledge and speak to the mountains in our lives.  If we opt to ignore, blame-shift, avoid, accept, maneuver around, minimize, or dress-up our mountain--it will remain.

Consider the following individuals who applied this truth:
  • Gideon: Destroyed his father's altars (Judges 6:25)
  • Abram:  Left everything that was familiar to go where God called him (Genesis 12:1)
  • Ruth: Left Moab to live with her mother-in-law, Naomi.  She went on to marry Boaz (Ruth 1:16)

Obstacles move when we speak and pray in faith with power and authority as Jesus outlined in Matthew 21:21.  Consider how the following spoke to their mountain:
  • Caleb: Spoke to/confronted fear that was in the camp (Numbers 13)
  • David: Confronted the Philistine army and Goliath as he malevolently labeled, cursed, and name-called (I Samuel 17)
  • Esther: Confronted personal fear and insecurity that enabled her to go before the king unannounced on behalf of her people (Esther 4)

Questions/Thoughts for Reflection
1.  Are there mountains in your life?  If so, name them.

2.  Why are they present?  Pinpoint the origin.

3.  For every mountain you identified, find a scripture.

Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you for giving us the power and authority to speak to the mountains in our lives using your Word.  Thank you for the internal disruption and feelings of discomfort.  It's an indicator that you are at work. You are bringing an awareness to what has become familiar. You have called us to greater.  You desire that we live lives of abundance and victory.

Thank you for the promise that as we pray in faith, mountains are being uprooted and removed.  We receive that now in Jesus' name.  Amen and so be it according to your Word.

Dangers of the Occult with Children

7/7/2016

Picture
"Then some little children were brought to him, so that he could put his hands on them and pray for them. The disciples frowned on the parents’ action but Jesus said, “You must let little children come to me, and you must never stop them. The kingdom of Heaven belongs to little children like these!” Then he laid his hands on them and went on his way."--Matthew 19:14 (Phillips)

In our blog post from July 1, 2016, we looked at the dangers of the occult in the lives of adults.  Today, let's consider the effects of the occult in the lives of our precious little ones.

Years ago when I did in-home counseling, I worked with a family who had a teenager daughter.  The teen's mother was frustrated and angry with the child because she was "obsessed" with a movie that dealt with white magic.  The mother would angrily described how her daughter would watch the movie ad nauseam.  She would also light candles and chant.  As the mom ranted, the teen sat aloofly, seemingly unabashed by the concern of her troubled mother.

You may question how things progressed to that point. The answer--very easily!  Think about the TV shows, movies, books (even school books), games, video games, music, and toys that target children.  It's shocking!  Most of what our children are exposed to is dark and either covertly or overtly incorporate some form of the occult--magic, psychic ability, clairvoyance, etc.

It seems innocent and harmless enough, right?  Friendly and cute characters dancing and singing, vibrant colors, and music with a great beat and catchy hook.  But, that is how satan operates.  The word of God tells us that he disguises himself as an angel of light:

"And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
         --2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV)

Satan is a liar and a counterfeit who masquerades and deceives.  The Bible says he is more subtle.  He is good at what he does!  Every lure he uses is intended to separate children spiritually from the loving arms of the Father, render confusion into their minds, and introduce darkness into their hearts.

Thoughts to consider:
  • Children are called to contend with the enemy, not be entertained by him(Psalm 127:4-5)
  • We (inclusive of children) were designed for relationship with God
       (James 4:8)
  • A relationship with God reveals purpose and destiny--even in youth!
       (I Samuel 3/Jeremiah 1:9-10)
  • Prayer, regular Bible reading, scripture memorization cultivates relationship and draws a child closer to God (Psalm 119:11)
  • Spiritual gifts become activated and apparent with there is relationship with God (Isaiah 11:2-4)
  • Awesome things begin to happen in a child's heart when relationship with God is cultivated and his word begins to take preeminence in his/her life
       (I Samuel 17/Daniel 1)
  • Children become aware and sensitized to the voice of Holy Spirit--his guidance, conviction, promptings (John 16:13)
  • A relationship with God cultivates inner peace in a child's heart, builds confidence, develops character, and leadership abilities, promotes good decision-making and life skills, and even regulates behavior (Psalm 4:4)
