The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines guilt as, "a bad feeling caused by knowing or thinking that you have done something bad or wrong". At one time or another, we have all experienced the feeling of guilt. Unresolved guilt can immobilize us spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. It can also be the root cause of physical ailments. When we carry unresolved guilt, we create soul wounds that fester and do not heal. Guilt and regret are tools that the enemy uses to keep us bound and shackled. Living in the darkness of guilt and regret impedes growth, movement, and liberty in our lives.
Recently, someone shared a personal regret of aborting a child over fifteen years ago. As she courageously shared her story, you could see a sense of relief come over her. For years she carried the invisible weight of guilt and lived in continuous regret. Yet, the act of confession and "getting something of her chest" brought healing to her soul.
Many of us go into hiding (emotionally), living in a code of silence and secrecy because of guilt and regret. We have never confessed our guilt or regret to another person, leaving the unresolved matter to bring torment to our souls. God's word tells us to confess our sins--our short-comings, wrong doings, moral compromises, etc. to each other and pray. Why? So that we may be healed in our souls, our bodies, and relationships. Healing takes place when we courageously take the 1,000 volt risk to share our story and receive prayer.
