“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."--Joshua 1:8
Did you ever forgot where you placed your car keys? Ran up the stairs of your home, only to forget what you ran upstairs for? Have you ever had mental fogginess that a cup of coffee could not remedy? If you have experienced any of these, raise your hand!Perhaps I am alone on this one, but I could raise my both hands!
As we age and mature, the hippocampus--the part of our brain that plays a critical role in learning and memory begins--begins to shrink. Recent studies in neuroscience have suggested that the hippocampus is compromised in people with Alzheimer's disease.
Research also suggests that there are ways to strengthen and tone the hippocampus in efforts to maintain optimal brain health and mental sharpness, and be proactive against Alzheimer's disease. One of them being meditation. Meditation means different things to different people. However, in the context of this writing, we are speaking of biblical meditation; not meditation that is associated with New Age philosophies and practices. Biblical meditation involves a contemplative communion and reflecting upon our Creator, God the Father. We draw nigh to him by meditating on his word and pursuing his presence. This may be done through prayer, reading scriptures, worship and adoration (thinking about who God is and having a heart that is in awe of Him), as well as "soaking" (entering God's presence through music that draws you close to Him, and blocks anything that is not like Him).
Visit the Prayer section of this website and click on the Soaking Music Room as well as the Sound of Worship, Praise, and Adoration.
Another way to strengthen and tone the hippocampus is through memorization, which keeps the mind engaged, stimulated, and active in a constant state of learning, growing, and changing--even on a molecular level (neuroplasticity). Simply memorizing a scripture daily not only feeds your soul (Jeremiah 15:16), but it also brings health and healing to the body (Psalm 103) and even strengthens your brain (Isaiah 26:3)! God thought of everything!!!
Science is proving what the Ancient of days has spoken through his holy word, the Bible. He is the Creator. He designed our bodies and knows how they are to function.
